The function of the NFLIC is to provide the resources, services and facilities necessary to achieve its objectives and make suitable changes, if necessary, in the light of new developments in these areas. The main functions of the NFLIC are given below :
to acquire reading materials, according to the requirements of the objectives of the NFLIC;
to take suitable action for their maintenance, preservation and protection;
to organise the reading material for effective use by classifying, cataloguing, indexing, etc.;
to arrange the material in one or more sequences most convenient to use by readers;
to provide adequate space for reading materials, equipment and readers;
to provide readers services;
to maintain sufficient and competent library staff to handle the reading material, equipment
and readers’ services;
to use adequate means to attract readers into the library and to promote reading habit;
to actively disseminate information about the NFLIC and its programme;
to adopt means for integration with the research and educational policies of the ICFRE;
to continuously weed out outdated and unused materials;
to identify the information resources available in other parts of the world that are relevant to
the interest of the Council.
